The Rainbow Charizard Fat Loss Lesson

In 2017, I had no idea I’d be learning anything about fat loss from a pack of Pokémon cards.

At the time, I was in my early twenties—long past my childhood obsession with Pokémon. I’d grown up with it: the Game Boy games, the trading cards, all of it. But life had moved on.

My little cousin Lucas, on the other hand, was deep in that world. He was about nine years old, full of energy, and completely obsessed with adding to his collection. Getting a new pack of cards was always a big deal for him.

One afternoon, I offered to take him out to buy a few booster packs from the new Burning Shadows set. Neither of us knew much about rarities or chase cards—we just thought it would be a fun little outing. For me, it was pure nostalgia. For him, just another exciting day as a kid.

We got home, spread the packs across the table, and Lucas tore into the first one.

Rainbow Charizard.

Yes—that Rainbow Charizard. The one collectors still lose their minds over.

Lucas was ecstatic. I just stared at it, laughing, thinking, “Wow, they’ve made it way easier to pull awesome cards nowadays.”

But I couldn’t have been more wrong. That card was one of the hardest to pull from the entire era. We’d just hit it instantly—complete and utter luck.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it. But looking back, that pack was a perfect reminder of how deceptive early success can be.

Because we all fall for that illusion somewhere—whether it’s with cards, careers, or fitness. When you start a new fat loss journey, everything feels exciting at first. You drop a few kilos, your clothes fit better, your energy shoots up—it feels like magic.

But then the pace slows. Progress isn’t as obvious. Motivation dips.

And this is where most people give up, convinced they’ve “lost momentum” or “hit a plateau.

But what’s really happening is simple:
The easy wins are gone, and now you’re in the phase that actually matters.

Because fat loss, like life, rewards those who keep going when the excitement fades—when progress slows and the only thing left to rely on is habit.

That first pack made it look like rare cards came easily. But now that I’m back in the TCG world, I know better. Pulls like that are special because they’re not easy—because most of the time, it’s hundreds of average packs before you see something incredible.

Fat loss works similarly. Early results can trick you into thinking every week should feel dramatic.
But the real growth—the kind that lasts—happens during the slower stretches, when you’re showing up even without the excitement.

Lucas still has that Rainbow Charizard to this day. It’s a core memory we’ll both never forget. And every time I think back on it, I’m reminded:

The start is exciting. But it’s the days you stay consistent—when it’s not exciting—that make the result truly worth it.

If you’ve hit that slower phase and need help pushing through it, my free 14-Day Fat Loss Kickstarter will help you rebuild momentum one step at a time.

Think of it as having me in your corner every day for two weeks.
